the how-to of poetry

J: you’ve failed once more in that a good poem is never tidy – never let on that you went through great pains to get your lipstick just right; lines should break like kamikazes; you should be beautiful in your slovenliness; you should be enticing in your near-suicide.
(jenny boully: the body. 138, n)

i am quoting this because it expresses something i have been trying to put into words in my head for a long time and i pick up this book and it jumps right at me out from the page. actually, the whole book this is from was a reading adventure and i thoroughly enjoyed it. if you have an open spot on your reading list, give this one a try. it makes what i am sure frances wilson would call “seductive reading.”

as for jenny boully, i ordered a copy of another one of her books, [one love affair], a couple of weeks ago and am hoping it will get here pretty soon. there’s nothing like a fresh new book. kind of like cool, clean sheets. 🙂

i simply like this quote a lot, and really wanted to share it. i’ll just leave it like this. comments?
