Time for a new blog post. What have I been up to? Well, I have been reading (surprise, surprise). Here’s a list:
- Children’s Lit: The Incorrigible Children of Ashton Place, by Maryrose Wood, vol. 1, 2, & 3 (currently working on 4). If you enjoyed Lemony Snicket’s Series of Unfortunate Events, chances are you’ll enjoy this series too. It revolves around three children, whose origin remains mysterious, a plucky governess of 15 (later 16) years of age, whose background is yet another puzzle, and a group of odd characters who see the children as pains (Lady Ashton), potential hunting trophies (Lord Ashton and his friends) or a lucrative circus attraction. Along the way, we learn lots of ‘socially useful phrases.’
- Poetry: The Spokes of Venus, by Rebecca Morgan Frank. This just came out this month, so it’s hot off the press. Highly recommended!
- Poetry: The American Book of the Dead, by Jim Barnes. This one came out thirty-some years ago, but still makes good reading.
- Also worth mentioning: the latest issue of Memorious just went live a few few days ago, and it’s chock-full of brand-new poetry and short fiction. It makes a swell weekend read!
